Free-Motion Quilting–August 29, 2013

Back in March of this year I completed piecing the top of a baby quilt, “9-Patch Posies”.  This flimsy sat in the WIP pile for several months but has now moved to the top of the stack.

Quilting these swirls is a first for me.  I’ve practiced a few times but this is the first time I’ve actually stitched them on a quilt.  Things are going well so far and I’m liking the outcome.  All my quilting is done by me on my domestic machine so there are some quilt patterns that I just am not able to accomplish.

I have to say that deciding on the quilt stitching is one of the most difficult choices to make – at lease for me.  Picking blocks, colors, and fabric is fun; but when it comes to the actual quilting, I tend to stumble a lot.  All the choices I’ve made up to this point have created a certain “look” and “feel” and I want to be careful and deliberate in choosing a stitch pattern that contributes to that “look” and doesn’t distract or work against it.

How do you choose your quilt stitching patterns?

I'm linked to the Free Motion Quilting blog.  Check it out!

Have a great quilting day and thanks for stopping by.

  1. I like your quilting.
I quilt on my domestic sewing machine, too. Sometimes I quilt either vertical or horizontal wavy lines. I have done grids, random vertical and horizontal lines and stitch in the ditch. All with a walking foot.
Sometimes I do a free motion meander with a little quilting foot. I'm always looking for domestic machine quilting ideas.
A long arm sewing machine is not in my future.

    1. Thanks Sheila. A long arm machine is not in my future either, but I dream of maybe having a mid-arm model. In the meantime, I'm forcing myself to try new stitch patterns using the quilting/darning foot. But for stitching long straight lines I get a better result with the walking foot. Glad you stopped by and shared your views. ~Diane

  2. What beautiful swirls! They are amazing! I have tried several times to do swirls and I still just can't get the hang of it. I'm not giving up though.

And I agree with you: Picking the quilting pattern is the hardest "choice" for me to make. This is one of the reasons why I have a backlog of items that are all pieced waiting to be quilted because I can't decide what to do.

    1. Thanks Allison. I strive to make really nice curves, but I also know that when this gets washed nobody will be able to see my goofies. Keep trying!

  4. Your swirls are really pretty and uniform. Did you quilt in rows? or just where the swirls took you?

    1. All I really tried to do is keep a somewhat uniform distance between swirl lines. I went all over the place and added swirl echos to travel to new areas. Thanks for your comments. ~Diane

  5. Lovely swirls, Diane. They are great fun to do.

I have the same problem with deciding quilting patterns because I don't really like going over the seams when doing FMQ.

  6. I think it look great! Adds a lot of character and texture to your quilt. I choose a pattern based on how much time I am willing to spend on the quilt, what I want from the quilt, and what I think the quilt would look best with...probably not very helpful, sorry!

  7. Love your spirals. They are one of my favorite to quilt.

  8. Your spirals are fabulous. Looks very professional. I quilt on my domestic, too, and am currently "practicing" on a few quilts. I've gotten a lot better. You can search around youtube for videos on what to quilt where. Melody Crust has an excellent book, too, called A Fine Line. There are great ideas out there. Keep exploring. I'm learning so much. I also take closeup photos of good quilting I see at shows for reference. Hope this helps.

  9. Your spirals look great and compliment the straight lines of the piecing beautifully. I have 6 quilt tops waiting to be sandwiched and quilted! I know I should just 'bite the bullet' and get on with it but I'm so afraid of spoiling all the hard work of piecing with less than perfect quilting! Your work is inspiring me to get on with it - it's the only way I'll make any improvements and the wip/ufo's are getting me down! Have you tried may of Leah Day's FMQ designs?
    Thanks for the inspiration
